Andrei Varlamov
Professor of the University “Tor Vergata”, Rome, and the Research Director of the Institute for Superconductivity and Innovative Materials of the Italian National Research Council.
Graduated from Moscow Physical-Technical Institute (1977), PhD from Landau Institute for Theoretical Physics (1980), Professor of Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys (since 1988). Then moved to Italy. World known expert in superconductivity, Andrei Varlamov had also a privilege to work with several great scientists. His thesis advisor was Alexei Abrikosov, who received the Nobel Prize for prediction of vortices in superconductors. Varlamov is the author of several books, among which at least two should be mentioned separately. These books are very different and both are of special importance. The first one is highly scientific, on the theory of fluctuations in superconductors. It is written together with Anatoli Larkin, who was a world famous theoretician and great physicist. The second book is educational, it bears the title “Wonders of physics” and is about physics in everyday life, including physics at the kitchen from which you can learn a lot about physics of good coffee, of good wine, and so on. It is translated into many languages. This book has been written together with another known physicist, Lev Aslamazov.
