Recreational Activity
Field Trip of the Lab to Fiskars
On August 30 the personnel of the laboratory made a bus trip to Fiskars, about 80 km west of Helsinki. Fiskars is an old industrial site, which nowadays is inhabited by artists and craftsmen producing artisanal items mainly for tourists.
A very good dinner was enjoyed in the restaurant "Kuparipannu"

The building originally designed by Alvar Aalto has been thoroughly renovated to serve the purposes of a new scientific research site in nanotechnology and low temperature physics. The building is planned to be ready by August 2007

Riitta Hari receives the Erkki Kivalo Prize of the Neurology Foundation (Neurologiasäätiö)
The Neurology Foundation awarded the Erkki Kivalo Prize for the second time. On November 1st, 2006, the prize was awarded to professor Riitta Hari, director of the Brain Research Unit at the Low Temperature Laboratory of Helsinki University of Technology, TKK. The amount awarded is 10.000 €. In addition she gave a lecture on the perspectives of neuroscience. The prize is awarded every second year. The first prize was awarded to Markku Kaste, professor of neurology in University of Helsinki .

Erika Kirveskari receives the W A Cobb young researchers award
at the International Federation for Clinical Neurophysiology (IFCN) meeting in Edinburgh on September 10th 2006. She was awarded for her work "Neuromagnetic responses to vowels vs.tones reveal hemispheric lateralization" (Clinical Neurophysiology 2006;117:643-648) together with Riitta Hari and Riitta Salmelin.

The personnel of the LTL made an afternoon trip to Suomenlinna, the old fortress island south of Helsinki harbour, on August 31, 2006. A sumptuous meal was consumed in the resturant "Panimo"

The Low Temperature Group of the Institute of Physics has announced that the 2004 Simon Prize has been given to
Grigory Volovik
for his pioneering research on the effects of symmetry in superfluids and superconductors and the extension of these ideas to quantum field theory, cosmology, quantum gravity and particle physics.
