Prestigious science prize to the director of LTL

The 1995 ITALGAS prize on Physics was given to Olli Lounasmaa on October 13 in Turin, Italy. This 100 000 000 ITL European prize in science is awarded every year by ITALGAS in collaboration with the Academy of Sciences in Turin, to three scientists working in one of the European Union countries. Subject fields alternate between physics, materials science, energy, chemistry, ecology and communications.

The dissertation of Juha-Pekka Vasama

The Academic Dissertation of Juha-Pekka Vasama is to be publicly discussed in the Auditorium of the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of Helsinki University Central Hospital, Haartmanninkatu 4, on Friday, September 29, 1995 at 12 noon. The opponent will be Prof. Stig Arlinger from Linköping, Sweden.

The thesis Human Auditory Cortical Functions: Rate and Intensity Effects and Reorganization after Unilateral Hearing Loss describes experiments which compare hemispheric differences in the effect of the stimulus repetition rate and intensity on cortical responses, to give information of the reorganization of human auditory pathways after hearing loss. Three patient groups with different unilateral hearing disorders were studied 1) congenital conductive hearing loss, 2) permanent deafness due to acoustic neuroma surgery and 3) idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss on auditory cortical responses. The results obtained by studying auditory cortical functions associated with tonal stimuli, were compared with data from normal-hearing controls

The study was performed in the Low Temperature Laboratory and the measurements were carried out in the magnetically shielded room with Neuromag's 122-channel planar first-order SQUID magnetometer.

The dissertation of Nina Forss

The Academic Dissertation of Nina Forss is to be publicly discussed in the Lecture Hall 2 of the Helsinki University Hospital, Haartmanninkatu 4, on Friday, June 16, 1995 at 12 noon. The opponent will be Prof. Francois Mauguiere from Lyon.

The thesis Whole-Head Neuromagnetic Characterization of Human Somatomotor Cortical Functions describes experiments of somatosensory cortical functions studied by electric median nerve and air puff stimulations in healthy volunteers. The investigations define which cortical areas are involved in processing of tactile information and in generation of movements. Moreover, primary and secondary epileptic foci were identified in patients with focal epilepsy.

The study was performed in the Low Temperature Laboratory and the measurements were carried out in the magnetically shielded room with Neuromag's 122-channel planar first-order SQUID magnetometer.
