The Physics Nobel Prize 1998 was given for the discovery and theory of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect to Daniel Tsui, Horst Stormer and Bob Laughlin. It is an old tradition that the Physics Prize winners visit Helsinki after the Nobel ceremonies and so happened also this year when Stormer and Laughlin visited the Low Temperature Laboratory and gave a lecture at the "House of Estates" in Helsinki.
1984 - the fractional quantum hall effect was measured with a dilution refrigerator in the hybrid magnet in the Francis Bitter National Magnet Laboratory at MIT , Cambridge, MA. From the left Albert Cheng, Peter Berglund, Dan Tsui and Horst Stormer - that was almost 15 years ago - time flies
Arriving in the evening from Stockholm to be interviewed by students - tough life
In the front row Taisto Haavasoja with the wives of the nobelists. The interview lasted for more than an hour and was certainly one of the most enjoyable occasions held in that lecture hall.
It is an old tradition that the brain activity of the prize winners is recorded for the posterity in the Brain Research Unit of the Low Temperature Laboratory. Here Horst Stormer under the 122 channel magnetometer.
The rector of HUT, Paavo Uronen, welcomed the nobelists. Here the rector with Bob Laughlin and Mikko Paalanen
