Kevo Spring School on Mesoscopic Physics for Graduate Students of Nordic Countries

April 22 - 28, 2001
Kevo Subarctic Research Institute

Pictures from Kevo

SCOPE: The School is intended for graduate students (and post-docs) of Nordic countries interested in the following topics: Dissipative quantum mechanics (Andrei Zaikin), quantum computation (Rosario Fazio), shot noise in mesoscopic systems (Yaroslav Blanter), and transport phenomena in one-dimensional conductors (Frank Hekking).

The idea is that mornings will be reserved for cross-country skiing and other outdoor activities of free choice. The afternoons are scheduled for lectures (4 per day). The evenings are reserved for students' presentations (3 minute talk + poster), and sauna. The school is intended for 30 people from Nordic countries.

LOCATION: Kevo Subarctic Research Institute, Ivalo.

The Kevo research station is situated on Lake Kevojärvi, in the commune of Utsjoki, the northernmost municipality in Finnish Lapland.

EXPENSES: For graduate students the room and board in Kevo are free. For post-docs the cost of food and accommodation will be 1100 FIM. Transportation to and from Kevo must be paid by the participants. A group flight + bus (costs about 2000 FIM) from Helsinki to Kevo on April 22 (AY 3469: 11.50 - 13.30) and return from Kevo to Helsinki on April 28 (AY 3470: 17.00 - 18.35) is arranged. If you intend to use this transport, please inform the organizers on the registration form. You may apply for financial support on the registration form: in addition to NorFA stipends, the organizers are able to arrange about ten grants, 1800 FIM each. For others, see the travel information below.

REGISTRATION: Owing to space limitations, the total number of students & postdocs will be restricted to 30. The registration form can be accessed through the web. Deadline 15.3.2001!

TALKS AND POSTERS: In addition to the lectures, the students are expected to present their own work in the form of posters (width 90 cm * height 120 cm). Poster sessions are scheduled on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday evenings. There will be a brief oral session of the posters and we encourage the authors to prepare one to three viewgraphs in order to briefly describe the content. Prize for the best poster presentation will be given. See the programme below.
