This Symposium was arranged at the Helsinki University of Technology (HUT) in Otaniemi, Finland, on June 14 - 17, 1998. The organizer was the Brain Research Unit of the Low Temperature Laboratory (LTL) of HUT, under the auspices of the Academy of Finland and the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science. Introduction
Academician Olli V. Lounasmaa acted as the Chairman of the Symposium, Prof. Riitta Hari chaired the Program Committee, and Docent Riitta Salmelin was the Chairperson of the Organizing Committee. The Japanese Organizer was Prof. Kazuo Sasaki (National Institute for Physiological Sciences, Okazaki), assisted by Dr. Toshiaki Imada (NTT Basic Research Laboratories, Kanagawa). The Symposiun was also sponsored by the Finnish Graduate School of Neuroscience (FGSN) and by Neuromag Ltd. Councillor Hajime Kitaoka of the Japanese Embassy in Finland participated in the Opening Ceremony wishing success for the Symposium.
